"Over the rooftops burns Billy
Balloon sadly the string descends
Searching its way down through blue submarine air..."
(scott walker, plastic palace people)

"Got myself a red balloon
Got a blue surprise..."

The first time I heard "plastic palace people", I thought about this film Albert Lamorisse, "The red balloon."
Afterwards, there was ...
"I've never had a red balloon when I was a kid in my neighborhood..."
At least fifteen years that I did not listen this serge Lama's song, released on an EP in June 1967.
For Tim Hardin, same year, the balloon was red and blue, surprise.
"Got myself a red balloon

In his book devoted to Scott Walker's songs, "the rhymes of goodbye," Lewis Williams wondered if "red balloon" by Tim Hardin could be one of the sources.
1967 is a year for red balloons. Even if, in Walker's song, colour is not mentioned. Since Marvin B. Naylor gave him word in an amazing composition - "beautiful balloon" - there is no more doubt: the balloon is red. Blood runs through its flanks. Eternally.
